Behchoko November 2018: Day 6

Day 6! Here’s a bit about our day from Sydney!

Wow, what a great day. We started out the day by heading out to Yellowknife for some groceries, lunch, a trip to the Prince of Wales Heritage Centre for an exhibit scavenger hunt that resulted in a button as a prize (now I have two!). Photos with stuffed fish were taken, excitement was expressed at a stuffed dog that was similar to one of our own, counting 37 birds in some paintings and everyone huddled in a small wood house are just some of the moments that happened in this museum. From here we all headed to Tim Hortons for some well needed (and well deserved) caffeinated beverages. Once we were done in Yellowknife we headed out to a little boat launch where we froze our buns off for approximately ten minutes all for a few photos and a rather pathetic snowball fight. All the more – fingers were frozen and memories were made.

Once we got back to Rae, I grabbed four of our students: Rebekah, Caleb, Faethe and Maddie and we headed out to the Sportsplex to hop into some games of basketball, volleyball and just some normal chatting. After about an hour of playing some games we yelled that we would be taking a van load of students back to the church for the Café and I kid you not, fifteen kids came with us back to the church. I was absolutely astounded. The looks on everyone’s faces – especially Kaleb, who was running the welcome station – was hilarious. None of us really expected all that many students to come back with us, it was a really cool thing to witness and be a part of.

Tonight at Alpha there was this sense of calm over the room. The topic of the video tonight was The Cross and I have honestly never seen those kids sit so still and be so quiet. It was pretty cool to watch. Savannah and I were sitting at the back of the room together just watching this all unfold. God was definitely moving in this small church tonight – even if other people weren’t able to see it.

Overall, being able to lead this wonderful group of youth students up here in the North has been an extremely cool experience. Watching them be pushed out of their comfort zones (both willingly and unwillingly sometimes) and then being able to watch them slowly dive into ministry is one of the most heart-warming things that I am able to watch on this trip. It is so cool to watch God work through our students to the youth of Behchoko. God is moving, He is evident and He is moving in the hearts of everyone here.

TO THE PARENTS:

Your kids are incredible. They are embracing the unknown and are rolling with the punches as they come. Please keep us in your prayers as we head into the end of our trip and our ministry here in Behchoko comes to a close for the time being. Leaving the relationships that are built up here is anything but easy. We can’t wait to see you and I’m sure there will be so many stories to share. Thank you so much for allowing your kids to come with us on this trip – they have made all of the difference and are huge blessings in our lives.

Until next time,

Sydney
